As a long time visitor to Bali (I have been coming to Bali since 1999), I was really amazed by how the motorbike rental business has changed on Bali over the recent years.
From shady street deals with passports being a security deposit (big NO NO) providing the typical low quality and but cheap motorbike rental options in Bali now there are actually a few reliable Motorcycle Rental Agencies in Bali! For this comparison I researched motorbike rentals in Kuta mostly.
The best part is that even a few of them let you complete the entire booking process online. So now you can book from the comfort of your home or if you are already in Bali, your accommodation. One of them even delivers and picks up your bike ALL OVER BALI! To find out which company that is, all you have to do is scroll down to the comparison list.
You might have visited my pre-pandemic comparison website before but it became a bit ancient looking so I decided to do a complete overhaul. I hope you like the added features and new layout!
How did I compare all features of the 6 motorbike and scooter rentals in Bali?
Well, this was the part of where I thought it would be quite simple to make a quick comparison. However, when I went over to the websites of the motorbike and scooter rental companies in Bali that I found through my Google searches I never thought the list of items to compare would become this long.
Surprisingly there is one online motorbike rental agency in Bali that I found to be significantly ahead compared to the other ones. If you have a look at www.bikago.com you will see that they offer a lot more services in comparison. Personally I have been renting with them since 2014 for a variety of reasons and I would recommend you to at least consider them. They are not the cheapest scooter rental in Bali (and they never claim to be as they focus on reliability and quality) but from my point of view (and others) you get a SIXT or HERTZ alike rental experience for half the price you would pay in any western country. If you are looking for a cheap scooter rental in Bali, those options are listed too. Remember that “cheap” doesn’t always means you will be saving money but in the end the choice is yours!
I prefer for my bike to be delivered and picked up at my accommodation at a time that is convenient to me. This way I have a quiet location where I can thoroughly check my motorbike and take it for a quick test ride. Some of the Scooter Rental Companies in Bali offer this service but make sure you check if it is already included in their rental prices as some offer this at a premium. Especially if you are renting a motorbike in Sidemen, Lovina, Padangbai and other beautiful but more remote areas of Bali.
In contrast to a few years ago you will find that the online motorbike rental agencies in Bali offer motorbike rentals with delivery and pickup, (charging) smartphone holders, a first aid kit, full tank of gas, sanitized helmets, insurances and the list goes on. So… well done by those companies! They really came a long way since my first rental experience in Bali.
When you are going to rent a motorbike or scooter to explore beautiful Bali I hope that the comparison I have put together will assist you in making a comprehensive and well thought through decision that results in an amazing rental experience. Be it with a top notch Scooter Rental Company or a cheap motorbike rental in Bali. The most important thing is that you always wear a helmet, have your International Drivers License on you and DONT DRINK AND DRIVE!

This week it was all over the news that Bali holidaymakers would be banned from renting scooters or motorcycles with frustrated cops lashing out at “tourists” misbehaving and not following the rules to participate in motorized traffic in Bali. Some sources of those news releases you can find here:

Reading those articles made me wonder if a governor could really enforce this as there should be a law in place to really enforce this? I conducted some research and found that some motorbike and scooter rental companies in Bali did respond to the proposed tourist scooter rental ban in Bali. Here is what they have to say about it:

A valid driving license: You need a valid driving license issued in your home country AND an International Driving Permit (IDP). Some rental companies accept a local driving license, this is risky as it is not recognized by the authorities.
Passport: You will need to provide a copy of your passport.
Cash deposit: Most rental companies require a cash deposit.
Age requirement: Most rental companies require you to be at least 18 years old.
Experience: You should have a bit of experience riding a motorbike or scooter before renting one in Bali.

I think you really do, yes. Public transportation is non existing in Bali, the roads are congested more often than not and so narrow that ones you are stuck in a proper jam in a taxi or driving a car half your day goes to waste, easily. If you choose to discover on a rented scooter mostly by yourself and are not going for day length road trips you can get a Honda Scoopy (110cc) or Honda Vario (125cc).
If you are planning to ride together and go out of town and on road trips I recommend the Yamaha Nmax, Honda PCX, Honda CB 150X or the Yamaha XSR.
If you are not willing to spend hundreds of repair dollars when you get into an accident or a few thousand dollars when your scooter or motorbike gets stolen, yes you do. Personally I never rent a scooter or motorbike in Bali that does not at least covers theft as it does occur in Bali, just like anywhere else in the world.
Cheap Motorbike Rental companies in Bali will tell you it never happens but when you ask what they expect from you when your bike gets stolen you will hear that it is you who needs to pay for the bike when it gets stolen. If you rent an Nmax or Honda PCX you are looking at a USD 3000 tab and there is little to no chance of getting out of it!
I think it is quite safe yes. Although Bali traffic is unorganized, congested and pretty unclear on “how it exactly works” the pace is quite slow and so should you be. Take it easy, ride slow, keep a smile on your face and you should be good to go. Watch out for children, dogs and yes chickens 😉
Some of the traffic rules that you should be aware of when riding your rented motorbike or scooter in Bali include:
1. Drive on the left side of the road
2. Maximum speed limit: The maximum speed limit on Bali’s smaller/typical roads is between 40-60 km/hour.
3. Traffic signals: Please always obey traffic signals, including stop signs, traffic lights, and yield signs.
4. Using headlights: You are required to use headlights at night and during times of low visibility, such as during heavy rain or fog. Most of the bikes have “always-on” head and tail lights nowadays.
5. Using helmets: You are required to always wear a helmet. Also if you are a passenger.
6. No drinking and driving: It is illegal to drink and drive in Bali and there are strict penalties for offenders.
7. No using mobile phones while driving: Drivers are prohibited from using mobile phones while driving, except for hands-free devices such as a smartphone holder.
8. Yielding to pedestrians: You should yield to pedestrians at designated crossings and when they are crossing the road.
9. No overtaking: Overtaking is not allowed in certain areas, such as near intersections, bridges, and narrow roads. Besides it not being allowed be very cautios at night as street lightning is non existing and not all road participants are “bright-lighted”.
All the above said, traffic enforcement in Bali can be lax in some areas, so you should exercise caution and be aware of you surroundings at all times.
If you get into an accident on your rented scooter in Bali, the absolute first thing you should do is make sure that you and anyone else involved in the accident are safe! Get medical attention if necessary. You can always call 112, which is the general emergency number to contact the police, fire department and ambulance services.
In addition to 112, there are several other emergency numbers in Bali that you can call:
110: This is the emergency number for the police.
118: This is the emergency number for the fire department.
119: This is the emergency number for ambulance and rescue services.
It is important to note that these emergency services in Bali may not always have English-speaking operators. Try to have a local (or someone who speaks Indonesian) to help you communicate in case of an emergency!
Once you made sure that everyone is safe, you should contact your motorbike rental company and report your accident. They will send someone to the scene of the accident to look at the damage(s) to the scooter and may contact the police to report your accident.
If there are no injuries and the damage to the scooter is minor, you may be able to work out an agreement with the rental company to pay for the damage. However, if the damage is extensive or in case of injuries, you will be held liable for the cost of the damages.
You should be aware that in Bali (and Indonesia as a whole) driving without a valid license, International Drivers License and insurance coverage is illegal! This could impact claims and legal proceedings that may arise from your accident.
I do highly recommended that you have a valid International Drivers License and proper motorbike insurance coverage before operating a rented scooter in Bali (or anywhere else in Indonesia). Ask yourself honestly if you would operate a car or motorbike without the proper license and insurance in your home country!
When renting a scooter or motorbike in Bali your rental costs will vary depending on several factors, such as:
1. Your desired type of scooter rental in Bali.
2. The duration of your motorbike or scooter rental period.
3. Your location in Bali!
4. The quality and reliability of the company in Bali you are renting from.
Renting a scooter or motorbike in Bali that include insurance, delivery and pickup, roadside assistance, customer support and reliable motorbikes and/or scooters will obviously be offered at a higher price compared to the cheap scooter rentals in Bali operating from the curb side. The Bali scooter rental prices are subject to quality just like a hotel room or villa rental in Bali is. Low standards will get you something cheap, compared to when you expect safety, comfort and cleanliness you will pay a bit more.
On average, the costs of renting a standard automatic scooter (110cc-125cc) in Bali is around IDR 90,000 to IDR 140,000 per day (approximately USD 7.00 to USD 10), while a high-end automatic scooter (150cc-250cc) can cost between IDR 180,000 to IDR 300,000 per day (USD 12 to USD 20). Manual motorbikes like the Honda CRF and Yamaha XSR (150cc) cost between IDR 180,000 to IDR 300,000 per day (USD 12 to USD 20) per day.
It’s important to note that some bike rental companies in Bali will require a valid international driver’s license (it is the law after all) and/or a cash deposit. Make sure to always check your Bali scooter rental agreement before making any online or cash payments! In Bali motorbike rental insurance is hard to find, I dont rent anything motorized anywhere in the world without proper insurance. I would recommend you to do the same.
Also ask the Bali scooter rental company you are considering renting from if they conduct proper bike inspections before renting out there motorbike or scooter to you. Even if they do ALWAYS inspect the scooter or motorbike before signing your Rental Agreement in Bali, this to to avoid any misunderstandings or issues between you and the motorbike rental company in Bali.
